Seattle Examiner Review by Char Easter
June 20, 2010

"Captured in the title of his film, "Programming the Nation?" - Jeff Warrick asks a compelling question, one that Americans should be asking."

"In the subliminal department, he leaves no stoned unturned. Warrick's impressive inventory of footage, including Led Zeppelin, the Matrix, Devo, and vintage ads, roll behind his well-crafted story."

"To help tell his story, Warrick recruits an impressive line-up of interviews ranging from Queensryche's Geoff Tate, who served up death and sex as pop-culture entertainment, to retired U.S. Army Colonel Dr. John B. Alexander, founder of Non-Lethal Defense and who operated within classified military channels."

"Then Warrick ends big, with governmental and military propagandizing, PSYOPS and the Project HAARP (High Frequency Active Aural Research Project), an instrument designed to modulate the ionosphere for weapon applications. Like 9/11 at the beginning, we are left to ponder, "How deep does the game go and who are making the rules?"

"...Warrick proves he can go the distance to get the story..."

You are to be commended for such an exceptionally well done documentary. Its production values and professionalism are top notch. Anyone interested in the future of this nation needs to see it. The viewer can have no doubt that subliminal messages are part of the landscape of everyday life. I hope it finds its audience and I wish you all the best with it.

My team is calling this a "brilliant documentary". It gives me chills to be behind something getting such acclaim. You gotta realize, we're really a critical bunch over here, so this is a real compliment.

We are all very enthusastic with this movie. Not just flattering words. Personally I feel very rewarded of being involved in spreading this kind of content. We are working hard to take this score not to just the point where you like it but to the next level. Anything you need I am at your disposal.

Summarily I think it is a superbly-Directed film:

  • It defines its subject.
  • It covers various aspects and implications of its subject comprehensively.
  • It handles each subtopic with balance and without a prejudgmental agenda.
  • The experts & interviewees all have something interesting to say, and generally within audience ability to understand them and form a critical opinion.
  • There are no "flat spots", e.g. boring, where's the fast-forward button.
  • The progression is logical, with the narrator asking the same questions that occur to the viewer at each stage, then moving to address them.
  • Visually the film is a pleasure to watch - clear camera work, good lighting, timing.
  • Good sound quality, distinct/clear voices, non-intrusive sound effects.

Now to the big question: "What does the film argue, and did it do so successfully?" = What I asked myself when the end-credits started to run.

I see the argument as being that subliminal indoctrination exists and is being used on an almost universal scale in American society, in both the public and private sectors. [The film doesn't specifically exclude other nations or cultures - just doesn't address them.] It concludes that this is a problem, rather like the worried hero in _They Live_; the implication being that if we can somehow give everyone the "decoding spectacles", we'll all be O.K.

My concern with this solution is that it presumes that "natural/normal" human decision-making is sound.

Your film essentially examines _pistis_, and proposes to return people to _eikasia_, a sort of contemporary "noble savagery" glimpsed, perhaps, in those blissful people you interviewed on the street. I am sure that you would agree that removal of the _pistis_ environment, were that possible, would hardly propel the masses up into _dianoia_ (a state of rigorous, objective reasoning).

I see the solution to the "problem" of the film much as Plato and Iyer would: that it is the challenge and task of those enlightened to _dianoia_ [and more remotely to _noesis_ = Plato's "philosopher-kings"] to create and sustain the _pistis_ environment according to the highest social, humanitarian, and indeed planetary ethics - the supreme Good which Plato summarized as the _Agathon_. This is necessarily an elitist prescription, which makes it unpopular with the masses, particularly in our modern age in which the theme of democracy is held to be the ideal and "saviour" human mechanism.

I do not see the danger of elitism as itself _per se_ as long as it is governed by the _Agathon_. Elitism becomes dangerous when it loses that perception and conviction, becomes selfish and exploitive, uses the powers of _pistis_ to those base ends.

Thus the real problem is *ethical*, and your film does not identify or address that.

When I wrote _MindWar_ and later _PSYOP: The Ethical Dimension_, I tried to make the point that any technique (which PSYOP is) is just that. It can be used wisely or badly. The virtuous decision-maker must use it wisely, which in the context of a military weapons-system roughly means the winning of battles and wars without the infliction of bodily harm or territorial/environmental damage. The moment a trigger is pulled or a bomb is dropped, PSYOP has failed.

The failure of my papers was of course that they did not reach eyes receptive to them. The current controllers of the _pistis_ environment are oligarchs, not philosopher-kings. To the extent that _MindWar_ received attention, it was read for its technical/control concepts, not for any ethical superstructure governing them. Today I would condemn myself for having written "too much, too plainly", opening doors that should have stayed closed.

My second general observation about your film has to do with what I might call the "comparative weight" of any subliminal communication that may occur in the settings/examples that you provided. As a PSYOPerator, for instance, I would simply not bother with subliminals; my entire attention would be to the *conscious* attention and control of the target audience. *That* is true thought-control, not whether as a vague afterthought someone wants a Pepsi while doing what I want him to (which is presumably much more important and consequential than mere _eikasic_ pleasuring). In short, subliminals are a toy, a game being played for curiosity or amusement; but they are not even close to the "main event".

In this vein I was amused by the Disney cartoon "examples". Disney artists are famous for having put all sorts of in-jokes within their cartooning. For a comprehensive collection, see David Koenig, _Mouse Under Glass: Secrets of Disney Animation and Theme Parks_, Bonaventure Press, 1997. But it was just all for *fun*, for chrissakes, not to totalitarianize theater-goers! [If someone sees _The Little Mermaid_ and goes berserk because he thinks he saw the minister with an erection for a moment, that viewer has a serious personal problem!]

As for the rock music "hidden message" idiocy, I can still hardly believe the time/energy/hysteria wasted on that snipe hunt, as I saw first-hand with Paul Kantner of the Jefferson Starship in the 1980s - see Appendix #11 of my ebook _Temple of Set_ at www.xeper.org/maquino

And finally: Any action of communication, such as your film, is ultimately not just the "thing itself" but its impact upon recipients. Will it wake them up, enable them to see things more clearly, provoke them to positive action of some kind? Is it going to be the effective "distribution of _They Live_ glasses"? My opinion is that it's certainly the best set of glasses out there yet. Within its scope, I don't see how you could improve it. The next question is: Who's going to see it, at what level of Plato's pyramid? You're going to stir up some _pistis_ people. You will upset the oligarchs only if this agitation becomes too widespread to ignore or contain. You may have to grab your Oscar on the run. :-)

Good show!

Programming the Nation? Writer, director, producer Jeff Warrick is doing completion work on his documentary film, "Programming the Nation?" Among the prominent people Warrick has interviewed is John B. Alexander!

According to imdb.com's summary, "many authorities, since the late 1950's subliminal content has been tested and delivered through all forms of media, at an increasingly alarming rate."

"Programming the Nation?" examines the purported uses, influences and potential subconscious side-effects of what's going on beneath the surface of advertising, film, music and political propaganda. Even the US military has been accused of using this technology in their Psychological Operations Unit (PSY OPS) campaign.

"This socially relevant documentary not only traces the history of this phenomenon, but seeks to determine the validity and potential threat that may or may not exist. Do you ever find yourself doing or buying things without any conscious reasoning? Why has consumer debt in America risen over 50% since 1990? How is it possible that the United States consumes about 25% of the world's resources while only making up 4.5% of the world's population? Are we all part of an elaborate scheme which has been programming the nation?"

I, for one, like being programmed to covet Louis Vuitton luggage.
