Welcome aboard the maiden voyage of our new Subliminal Blog for the feature social documentary, “Programming the Nation?” What is a “Subliminal Blog”? It is my desire as the filmmaker for it to be a community that explores, discusses, and shows examples of all things “subliminal.”
Having spent numerous years researching, interviewing, and investigating the usage and effects of subliminal tactics while making the film, I have seen and archived countless examples that span an array of audio and visual mediums. Many of these discoveries have been shown to me by people who are considered authorities on the subject. Some are the result of your average, ordinary person who was basically staring at clouds, when it appeared.
The question I pose is, which of these are simply optical illusions? Which have been purposefully imbedded by the ad designer? Which are the result of decades of psychological testing and focus groups that have created an entire science of consumption? And which is just an accident that has been fueled by our own paranoia?
I’d really love to hear your thoughts and insights on all of this. So, please feel free to post your text comments and share your own stories of subliminal messaging in advertising, film, music, politics or anywhere else you believe such tactics are being used.
You can also upload examples of subliminal messaging to share with the group, (categorized at right by graphic, video, and audio examples). I will be adding and updating my own list of examples, but I encourage and welcome everyone to join the show!
I believe that by exposing, educating, and creating awareness, we can all raise our personal levels of consciousness. For it is only when something affects us subconsciously that it is considered “subliminal”.
